Art in the Park
The second annual Art In The Park event to benefit historic Bixby Park in Long Beach is Saturday, June 22nd from 10:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m.
We’re hoping you will want to be part of this annual fine arts event. This event will not only support historic Bixby Park, but local fine artists and musicians. Parks and Recreation has approved the event for twenty artists. The music will be provided by the popular Long Beach band Second Wind throughout the event. Four local restaurants, Park Pantry, Olives Gourmet Grocer, Paradise, and Cafe Ambrosia, will be offering box lunches for picnics at the park.
Post cards and flyers are ordered! They will be displayed at local businesses. An announcement will be in the Grunion Gazzette, as well as, in local community newsletters and web sites. On the day of the event, banners will be displayed at Bixby Park on Broadway in both directions.
Art In The Park will take place at Bixby Park, at the courtyard in front of the band shell. Artists will need to bring their own easels and a table if needed. If you have an umbrella, we would love it if you could bring it for your display. Artists will be responsible for money transactions for their artwork. We are asking artists to make a $50 donation to the park to display and sell their artwork. The $50 donation to the park should be sent to my address, and made out to: Friends of Bixby Park.
We would appreciate artists confirming their interest in participating in this event by Friday, May 24th. The flyer/poster advertising the event is attached.
Thanks for your interest,
Sincerely,

Bluff Park Historic District – A Walking Tour of History
Sunday, October 21st, 10:30am to 1:30pm
Our Bluff Park Neighborhood is one of the premier historic communities of Long Beach! Did you ever want to learn more about its history and the history of its early occupants?
This is a rare chance to meet two living legends that have devoted their lives to Long Beach History, Stan Poe and Maureen Neeley. Their knowledge about Bluff Park and the surrounding Historic Districts is unsurpassed and their insights on activities behind the scenes is very entertaining. (Not too long ago Stan gave a brief historical presentation to a meeting of our Bluff Park Neighborhood association and kept more that 50 attendees spellbound with his presentation and photos – so don’t miss this!). Following the presentation docents will lead small groups through the neighborhood highlighting homes and history. A gourmet box lunch by Olives Gourmet Grocer (always delicious!) will be provided in one of the lovely back gardens of Bluff Park. The program starts at 10:30, October 21st and will conclude around 1:30.Tickets will still be available to purchase to the event through Saturday at 6pm and can be purchased at Sasha’s Design store on 3237 East Broadway.

Shore Patrol: Bluff Park Neighborhood Association home tour beckons By Joe Segura Staff Writerpresstelegram.com
There are at least three reasons to attend Sunday's Bluff Park Neighborhood Association home tour:
There'll be plenty of exercise - but not overly taxing - plenty of history of the area, and it will help support the association.
The Bluff Park Historic District's boundaries run from Ocean Boulevard to Broadway between Junipero Avenue on the west to Loma Avenue on the east. The 25-home tour - 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. - will focus on sites between Paloma and Kennebec avenues, sandwiched between Ocean and Second Street, according to Sasha Witte of the association.
A gourmet box lunch by Olives Gourmet Grocer will be provided in one of the handsome gardens of the community. To include a box lunch, tickets must be purchased no later than 2 p.m. today.
Tickets including a box lunch are $20 each; without a box lunch, $15. They can be purchased by visiting www.BluffPark.org or by visiting Sasha's at 3237 East Broadway.
The neighborhood was designated a historic district in 1982, and it holds many architectural treasures from the early 1900s through the 1930s in particular, according to Witte.
Long Beach historians and authors Stan Poe and Maureen Neeley will give a presentation on the area's significance.
Following the presentation, docents will lead small groups through the neighborhood - stopping for a box lunch - before completing the tour with highlights on homes and history.
"The whole area is interesting," Poe said Thursday.
Sunday's tour will focus on the first four decades of history and architecture in the Bluff Park area.
Many wealthy businessmen and civic leaders, Witte said, built their homes on the prime lots.
In the 1920s, quite a few Hollywood stars spent their time in homes in Bluff Park.
Poe said the key mover and shaker was John Bixby, who began efforts to develop the area in the 1880s, initially aiming to build an Alamitos Beach town site for the upper class.
A rail line traveled along Broadway, and farms were established north of the tracks while villa lots were anchored on the south, according to Poe.
Not much development took root until the oil boom of 1921, he added.
"That's what poured money into Long Beach," Poe said.
Many of the lots were large enough for a second structure, according to Poe.
In the first decade of the 20th century, a housing boom resulted in many new homes that were designed in the Victorian, Transitional and Craftsman styles, Witte said.
In the following years, she added, the Prairie style and Period Revival styles of architecture appeared, with many fine Tudor, Mediterranean and Colonial Revival homes built.
The Craftsman Bungalow has remained the predominant historical house type in the district, according to Witte, due to the intensive home construction between 1905 and 1920.
Featured homes this year will include Arts and Crafts homes, Spanish Revival treasures from the 1920s, Art Deco, Victorian and a couple of Mid-century structures.

The Preservationist of the Year Award will be presented to John Thomas for his significant contributions and dedication to historic preservation. He has held the positions of president and vice president of advocacy on the Long Beach Heritage Board of Directors, and was instrumental in persuading city officials to adopt a Historic Preservation Element into the General Plan. John also chaired the Long Beach Redevelopment Agency, and is president of the Art Deco Society of Los Angeles and the Bluff Heights Neighborhood Association. He has previously been on the board of directors of the Long Beach Historical Society and a consultant to the Queen Mary. Trade Fair
4th Restoration Trade Fair & Fundraiser focuses on “The Culture of Restoration”
Sunday Sept. 25th 9:30-4pm • Luther Burbank • 4th & Junipero, Long Beach, CA
Long Beach, CA (August 19, 2011) – You can’t open a paper or turn on a TV these days without hearing the word, ‘makeover.’ Everyone is redoing their personal spaces from the ground up; both inside and out. Homeowners, and those who aspire to owning property, often have a daunting challenge when it comes to navigating the processes of starting new projects—whether it’s picking a subcontractor for a big job or selecting paint to do it themselves. Add in the aspect of owning in a historic district, and those questions are often compounded due to the city’s preservation procedures and guidelines.
A great place to gather knowledge and information is at the upcoming 4th Restoration Trade Fair & Fundraiser, slated for Sunday, September 25, 2011, 9:30am-4:00pm at the Luther Burbank School [4th & Junipero in Long Beach, CA]. Hosted by Rose Park Neighborhood Assn. in partnership with the Luther Burbank School, this Rose Park annual event provides the ultimate one-stop resource base. Over 50 specialty vendors and exhibitors will be on-hand as will a variety of non-profit, city, heritage, historic and community groups providing educational services to add color and character to the day. Plus, top-notch local vendors and artisans offering services and consulting in a variety of areas, including landscaping and nursery resources, interior/exterior design, flooring, painting and finishing, and much more! Not sure where to start on a project? The Trade Fair offers lots of opportunities to meet restoration specialists and artisans, so bring photos of your home with a list of questions.
“The theme for this year’s fair is the Culture of Restoration,” offered coordinator, Gretchen Swanson. “With tight homeowner budgets comes the appreciation of a simpler way of life and the gratification of restoring one’s own home. It can often be a intimidating process and the Restoration Trade Fair was created several years ago with the goal of offering resources and education.”
